ch 20
I'm not too sure about this article. Some parts made total sense, others made some sense and still others made no sense at all. The first part about rules made no sense because it seemed like she was saying rules are inherently evil. She made it sound like the only reason for class rules is so you can turn your kids into mindless robots. I disagree with that. Yes, there is an argument that inner city kids are just being put through the motions of schools to turn them into low-wage workers, but I don't think the presence of rules automatically means that. Rules are a VERY important part of classroom management. Good classroom rules shouldn't be about making good workers but they should be about making good people. To me, classroom rules are about having good manners. Teaching kids how to be civil to eachother and how to engage in a conversation will help them to get a job later in life NO MATTER WHAT FIELD THEY GO INTO. Whether they work in a fast food restaurant or become a CEO, they need to know these people skills and that is why I see a need for GOOD classroom rules.

I agree. Rules are absolutely important and necessary components to a well-run classroom. I think the article was vague at times with separating the fact that rules are necessary, but must be used cautiously and uniformly for all students present. Rules in general as used to discipline African American students seemed to get blamed for the problem. I think the key to effective rules is to analyze current rule structures, decide what is necessary and beneficial to students, make the rules and general expectations very clear to all students, and enforce rules and regulations fairly and uniformly regardless of student population. Also, I think we need to better educate new (and old) teachers about disciplining students in general as well as diverse populations of students specifically to avoid the kind of destructive techniques presented in the article.

I agree that we should be teaching kids how to be civile to each other, whether it is for a job they get later in life, or just how they live their life. Some of the most important lessons we can teach stem beyond subject matter. I also feel that by respecting the rules, it shows you are respectful to others. And by giving some respect you can get some respect.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the comments. Rules are necessary in school. We have rules of society that needed to be followed and school offers a chance for children to learn the ways of these rules and learn what is expected from them in society.
ReplyDeletei also agree with all the comments. Rules are needed to be understood, students who break them do deserve some kind of consequence, because they are supposed to be learning how to act like mature adults, but I believe that possibly teachers could be much more lenient with certain rules, but like sara said learning to be civil now will mean a success to attaining a job in the future.
